India’s First Privately Built FFSC Rocket Engine ('EVEREST')
1. Launch & Global Standing
Milestone Unveiling: Bengaluru-based space startup Astrobase Space Technologies unveiled EVEREST, India’s first privately developed 800 kN Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC) LOX–Methane rocket engine.
Elite Global Club: With this development, India joins an elite group of nations (Russia, USA, China) possessing FFSC technology. Astrobase becomes the 4th commercial entity globally to build a high-thrust FFSC engine.
UPSC Focus: Prelims: FFSC architecture, Astrobase, IN-SPACe TAF | Mains: GS 3 - Indigenization of technology & private sector participation in Space.
2. Technical Architecture & Efficiency
Full-Flow Staged Combustion (FFSC): Unlike open-cycle engines (where turbine exhaust is dumped), FFSC uses two separate pre-burners (one fuel-rich, one oxygen-rich) so that 100% of fuel and oxidizer pass through turbines before entering the main combustion chamber.
LOX–Methane Propellant: Uses Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Methane, which burn cleaner, reduce soot accumulation, run cooler, and enable rapid engine reuse.
Engine Specifications: 800 kN thrust, 340 seconds specific impulse, and a wide 50%–110% throttle range designed for reusable medium-lift launch vehicles.
UPSC Focus: Prelims: Propellant types (LOX-Methane vs. Unsymmetrical Dimethylhydrazine), Specific Impulse, Staged Combustion vs. Open Cycle | Mains: GS 3 - Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) technological leaps.
3. Strategic & Economic Significance
Reusable Launch Systems: The engine's high thermal efficiency and throttle capability provide the foundational propulsion needed for reusable medium-lift rockets, lowering launch costs per kilogram.
Launch-on-Demand Capability: Designed to support mission preparation and dedicated launch operations within 15 days of receiving urgent national or commercial payloads.
IN-SPACe Institutional Support: Financed partly under the Technology Adoption Fund (TAF) of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre), demonstrating effective public-private partnership in deep-tech innovation.
UPSC Focus: Prelims: Role of IN-SPACe, TAF guidelines | Mains: GS 3 - Space economics, satellite constellation deployment, and strategic autonomy.
